The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) was officially launched on July 1, 2002 with a seed grant from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Chesapeake Climate Action Network is a registered 501(c)3 organization located in Takoma Park, Maryland.

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network is the first grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to fighting global warming in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC.[1] Its mission is to foster a rapid societal switch to clean energy and energy-efficient products, joining similar efforts worldwide to address global warming.

The group drew attention in October 2008 when it was revealed that for a 13-month period beginning in March 2005, three environmentalists working for the group were listed by the Maryland State Police as "suspected of involvement in terrorism."[2] The disclosure by police concluded that there was "no evidence whatsoever of any involvement in violent crime."
