This is a pledge for UK councils that want to commit to reduce their locality's carbon emissions. It was launched at a conference in Nottingham in October 2000.

Come Hell or High Water 1

Agreement reached setting out how local and central government will work together to tackle climate change. "LG Group agrees to take on a leadership role in encouraging all councils to demonstrate their ambition on climate change through a New Nottingham Declaration and other appropriate agreements or declarations." 16 Mar [1] topic

As of October 2008 over 300 councils have signed

As of July 2006, 140 local authorities have signed the Declaration (or its equivalent).

By the time of a second conference, held on December 5 2005, a total of one hundred other councils have signed the Nottingham Declaration. A revised and updated Declaration was presented at the second conference, together with a five-year plan, aiming to

  • double the number of councils publicly committed to tackling climate change within a year (and double it again by 2008)
  • launch a Climate Action Pack
  • monitor progress and publish results
  • introduce a self-assessment benchmark for councils
  • reconvene in 2010 to push for further improvements.

At May 2005 85 councils had signed up.
