London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. It is also the most populous city in the European Union.

London has an estimated population as of 1 January 2005 of 7.5 million and a metropolitan area population of between 12 and 14 million. London's population includes an extremely diverse range of peoples, cultures, and religions, making it one of the most cosmopolitan, vibrant and energetic cities in the world, with over 300 languages spoken there.

Today, "London" usually refers to the region of London which covers thirty-two London Boroughs and the City of London.

The region of London shares borders with South East England and the East of England. Because of high degrees of interdependence it is arguable that neither London nor its neighbouring regions can approach sustainability in isolation.

• The amount of household waste produced per person in London was the lowest of all the regions, although the proportion recycled was also the lowest.
• The reuse of previously developed land for new housing was the highest of the regions as was the density of new housing.
• London had the highest level of productivity (gross value added per job).
• Rates of burglary, vehicle theft and robbery and fear of crime were the highest of the regions.
• London had the lowest rates of employment, the highest proportions of workless households, and the highest proportion of 16-19 year olds not in employment, education or training.
• The number of homeless people and homeless households was the highest of the regions and the proportion of people satisfied in the local area was the lowest of the regions. /
